In Nigeria, we call this the "Gele" or as we sometimes refer to as The African Crown. An adornment on the heads of beautiful black women across the vast countries of Africa. The "dhuku" in Zimbabwe to the "doek" in South Africa, this head piece has survived the era of colonialism and has made it's way into our daily lives.

As a covering over the head of a woman, this piece has signified a woman's marital standing in society, her value and worth, as well as her social status. The significance of this crown diminished during the colonial era due to a lack of respect or concern towards this vital piece of clothing.

Fast forward to our present day, It is amazing how many women are beginning to utilize this piece in multiple areas of their social, personal and work life.
The head wrap has sometimes pushed the envelope of western professional appearances. Certain businesses have banned such use in the work place. Black women, who identify with this form of head wear, continue to push the envelop and purposefully regaining what was once lost. Their crowns.
